Soul Recovery / Retrieval

Mankind alone amongst the beasts demonstrably examines and actively seeks to understand and quantify his existence. Until he examines the physical, spiritual and mental as an integrated whole, the Question will not be answered.  Until viewed wholistically, any answers can make no sense because the Questions themselves are not understood. -- Craig Berry

Welcome to the start of what is generally termed to be, "Shadow Work".

I guess the delineation between light and shadow work is best described at this point.  I would define that line as one where instead of simply journeying within the practitioner's self, shadow work involves an interaction between the practitioner and a subject or community in a material and highly direct way.  Possibly, the best line of demarcation (if one needs to be applied) would be in the measurability of results which become objectively real and measurable in shadow work as opposed to essentially only subjectively assessable in light work.

In my practice, I worked with a great young man who had a hard, gnarly, surgical scar which was dark and well bound throughout his abdomen via post-surgical adhesions.  Immediately following a soul retrieval, the scar was far softer and coherent, a more natural colour and far less involved with the surrounding tissues.  This is my basis for stating that in shadow work, objective, physical measurability should be expected of a practitioner.

Soul Recovery

Soul recovery is a term applied to a situation where a person has 'lost' a part of themselves, energetically, spiritually, emotionally or psychically.  We are not referring to the soul in the classic biblical sense of the singular spark of the divine which is subject to judgement and condemnation or sanctification on a judgement day.  We are instead referring to all of the person, including the physical!

A soul fragment may be separated by emotional trauma (eg. a broken heart), given away, taken, hidden through trauma etc.

Examples of Loss

"I have never been the same since..",  "I can't stop thinking about..", "She took a piece of my heart when she left."  These are statements that typify a soul loss.  Whatever the basis of a loss of a soul fragment, the understanding remains that the person has lost a part of themselves and are no longer as whole as they should be.

Applying an industrial, psycho-medical model, soul loss is typified as a repression.  If this were true, then mentioning the thing should bring a person back into a state of non-repression.  Instead, people feel the same loss, regardless of how much they process, analyse and 'deal with' that element of loss.

The Shamanic Process of Retrieval

A shamanic soul retrieval is a process where a practitioner journeys for a person, seeking a part of that person that is separate.  Once found, the soul fragment often needs to be coaxed, negotiated, cajoled or otherwise guided back.  Ego makes poor practitioners try to 'make' a piece come back; this is dangerous for the client (and their fragment) and will not bring a true healing in any form because the next part is integration of that piece back into the person.

Once coaxed into returning, the practitioner literally blows the soul fragment back into the client, then lets them rest and process the changes (often profound) that are happening.  I like to have clients give the returning part a strong and long hug, welcoming with an attitude of profound gratitude that part of them which has returned.

Following a Retrieval

It is important that the client refrain from harsh, intoxicating or loud activities for a few days following this to give them and their reunited part a chance to integrate fully.  The client is often profoundly aware of 'something being different' (to say the least).  Physical effects of events surrounding that aspect of loss often reverse markedly or wholly.

If the quantum physics thought of simultaneous super-positioning and entanglement are true, then the concept of separation of energetic portions not only makes sense but backs the evidence seen in a clinical situation where the current medico-scientific, Euclidean model says that the effects seen and experienced are impossible, but so are many experiments conducted weekly by quantum physicists.

In Summary

Soul retrieval is a process where a practitioner journeys for a person to seek and coax a lost fragment of that person back into coherence within this physical reality.  Loss may be for any number of traumatic events but always leaves the person less whole.  Following retrieval, a period of integration follows where the client is asked to treat themselves very gently, avoiding intoxicating, harsh or over-stimulating substances or situations.

A Word of Caution

N.B.  Soul retrieval is a very powerful and psychologically dramatic process.  Some practitioners claim to find and bring back all part of a person at once - a self-serving and egocentric approach disregarding the trauma that this amount of work brings.  If there are a number of loss generating traumas to be worked upon, I would consider this process far too huge for a person to be able to integrate, leading to further problems.  Soul retrieval should always be done with the respect of the fragment, the client and their situation.
