Assisted Passing & Soul Guidance Mankind alone amongst the beasts demonstrably examines and actively seeks to understand and quantify his existence. Until he examines the physical, spiritual and mental as an integrated whole, the Question will not be answered. Until viewed wholistically, any answers can make no sense because the Questions themselves are not understood. -- Craig Berry |

When a practitioner assists a passing, their intent is to help the spirit of that person leave in peace and in love. This same thing was done for animals and plants with a profound reverence and gratitude. The 'process of eating' as it is in the industrialised world is 'a sacred interaction' in shamanic society. Shamanic society recognises the total union, a 'wedding' if you will, between the eater and that which is eaten. We are taught that as much thought and feeling should go into joining with a piece of fruit as joining with your life's mate. A shaman is called to one who is at the end of their time and essentially marshals the resources of that person's totemic, power animals and spirit guides to make the transition from being bound to physical life into the next phase of existence as smooth as possible. Soul Guidance is the shamanic seeking of a lost soul, helping that soul to understand that their time has been and helping them to move on, releasing them. In western society such spirits are generally referred to as ghosts although this is not a clear definition of a lost soul.
I use this example as a simple and profound reason that a soul can become displaced. The pilot was, for years and years, still fighting the controls of his aircraft, fighting to save his passengers, desperate for a few more seconds in which to bring about a miracle. His focus was so great on this task (involving the right rudder pedal familiar to all pilots in emergency situations!) that he simply did not accept (or notice) the actual crash. As time is not linear (flowing from future to past) in the non-physical, his last second in the physical world had extended for years! There was no exorcism, no dramatic twisting of heads, bodies flying across rooms, flashing lights etc.! The spirit was approached with respect and with the intent of acceptance and peace. When he was assisted to realise his time was gone, he was able to move on. This is what Soul Guidance is. It is a peaceful, respectful, loving and kind communion with one who's spirit has not, for whatever reason, realised that they are no longer bound to this physical world. It is critical that practitioners attempting this for the first time seek the assistance of one experienced in dealing with these displaced spirits. Sometimes their need to remain is so strong that they will try to possess a living body. This then may cross the line into dark work if the spirit is not willing to listen to reason, requiring exorcism and guidance. Some shamanic texts written for the western market hesitate to mention the dangers involved in these shadow practices; essentially escalating in order of potential danger to the practitioner and subject as listed in the menu bar through light and shadow work. To reiterate what has been said previously, one who's calling remains in light work is in no way less a practitioner than one who is called to dark work! It is not a machismo thing! Shamanism driven by egotism is most dangerous. I might as well say it again just to hammer the point home here, "Shamanism practiced from ego is most dangerous!" There is no heroic aspect to shamanic practice,.. its aspects when practiced properly are those of gratitude, servitude, knowledge and humility. Dark work, especially, is a calling. Shamanism has many, many aspects. Some people's calling stops at soul recovery or personal journeying. In very few societies were shamanic trainees expected to do work for which they were not called as this placed the trainee in very real danger.
