Demon Extractions Mankind alone amongst the beasts demonstrably examines and actively seeks to understand and quantify his existence. Until he examines the physical, spiritual and mental as an integrated whole, the Question will not be answered. Until viewed wholistically, any answers can make no sense because the Questions themselves are not understood. -- Craig Berry |

To the reader: Most important here is the realisation that 'good intent' and 'happy thoughts' alone are far from adequate to keep a practitioner safe when handling demonic entities (a self-perpetuating energy, matter or spirit form). Think of this much like handling live and venomous snakes - not crazy if sufficiently trained and watchful but not a good idea if untrained and inexperienced with reptiles. Training, experience and a well trusted mentor are essential to anyone entering into Shamanic Dark Work practices. Please understand my exhortation to resist attempting any of the techniques described below without solid guidance and training; Dark Work is a calling; it does not indicate strength or power, prove how macho you are etc. If dark work is performed from an egotistic base, the practitioner will be hurt and their practice ineffective at best.
I have included these sections on Dark Work as a guide to prospective clients of Shamanic Practitioners regarding what to expect if undergoing rituals within this group of practices. We are not (typically) talking about Biblically defined, "Daemons" here. In fact, the biblical definitions are typically as far from Shamanic practices around demons as it is possible to get in all but the most extreme and rare examples. For those with an orthodox religious upbringing or definition, replace the common term of, 'demon' with, 'entity' if that makes things easier. Essentially, a demon is a quasi-self-perpetuating entity, independent of extraneous input to maintain existence. Most commonly, a demon with be in energetic form, far less commonly in physical form and even less commonly in spiritual form. The relative challenge posed by each type also ascends from energetic to spiritual. The challenge for the practitioner is that it often impossible to know exactly what you're dealing with until, "engaged" in the extraction. An energetic demon is normally a fairly straight-forward extraction whereas a spiritual entity more often than not goes right through any extraction techniques and often escalates quickly to an exorcism (and discussed far more fully in the last page of this series).
Demons are most typically invited or created by self or close familial association; less commonly, demons may be cast (think of casting a curse); the least common is the invasive demon. The best way to approach this line up is to examine each aetiology in turn. Invited or Created Demons; A persistent and generally negative thought, thought process or association is the most common way a demon is formed. An otherwise happy and fulfilled person might have a deep fear or experience of desertion / rejection which seemingly does not impact their daily life openly. Given some triggers, this fear may swell, taking on an energy of its own. The energy form of this fear, when held for long enough, becomes strong enough to be self-perpetuating [close enough not to matter].
Cast Demons; demons may be formed and cast either subconsciously or consciously. Sub-conscious casting is where a continual stream of ill-will is projected from one to another, either over a long time or with particular vehemence. Consciously cast demons from practitioners of esoteric arts represent Black Practices. A demon is formed by will and intent, then cast into the body of the host. As these energetic demons represent the overwhelming majority of subjects for extractions, we will not explore until later the other forms a demon may take as the extraction methods tend to be the same in all but final execution and resolution [exorcism excluded].
Regardless of the aetiology of the practitioner and demon, shamanic demon extractions typically fall under three classes of activity; journeying, sucking and hand grasping. Journeying is the first method of demon extraction where a practitioner will journey for the subject, who typically lies in the same room and does their best to remain quietly and fully present in the moment whilst their practitioner journeys for them. A shaman first works through his or her Guide/s (power animal/s or spirit guides) to locate and converse with the subject's guides and discuss the identity of the entity within them and the best course of action for its removal. Often, the advice received might mirror conventional orthodox thoughts like eating more appropriate foods, stopping certain bad habits etc. The subject's guide may also receive impetus from the shaman's guide/s to recognise a problem and work more directly and appropriately for the subject. A practitioner tries to NEVER use their own personal energy in direct competition with any entity and will not push energy directly to a subject, but will always use their guides as intermediaries. Sucking is arguably the most traditionally wide-spread of extraction methods in shamanic societies. The shaman uses a variety of physical and esoteric barriers and protection devices before commencing. The methods of identifying, locating and localising the entity vary with ethnicity, but the result is almost always the same. Once the shaman has sufficient protection in place to safeguard themselves and others, they literally place their mouth upon the subject and suck the entity into their mouths. Once so captured, the entity is disposed of safely, or in the case of some cultures, 'saved' for future use as a weapon. My experience with this technique, with one exception, is hearsay from other's accounts. To my European preconditioning, this represents the least desirable form to me personally. Hand Grasping is the technique of choice in most industrialised societies, especially those requiring more personal modesty than that of more traditional societies. The illusion of distance lures many into trying this before they are ready. I guess drawing the demon into one's mouth places the dangers at hand right in the forefront of thought. Regardless, an entity properly taken from one host will always seek another. If the practitioner is not properly trained and prepared, they will most likely end up playing host themselves. A shamanic apprentice often requires quite a few removals of entities by their master as they learn how to deal with the forces and powers themselves. Like sucking, the preparation and training requires strong and sure preparation on the part of the practitioner. By whatever method they use, the practitioner will seek the energetic, 'head' of the entity and grab, coax or draw that entity out of the subject. Typically, disposal is by running water or fire, returning the stagnant energy of the demon into circulation, thereby neutralising and dispersing it. One of the main dangers here lies in a practitioner only grasping parts of the entity. As the energy from which it comes is huge, it can be a bit like a magician drawing a seemingly endless line of streamers or knotted handkerchiefs from a pocket. The closest analogy is like brushing a long coated dog; it doesn't matter how long or how often you brush it, there is always more fur falling out! The thing that experience and tutelage provides in this regard is how to identify and capture the energetic centre (often represented by a head) of the thing, drawing it and its appendages free of the subject. Once an extraction has been achieved, the client will often see things in their life in a new light. The practitioner will offer thoughts on the nature of the entity and discuss ways to counter its re-manifestation. I have seen clients with medical mystery type symptoms see immediate and material results as soon as an extraction has occurred.
Once more though, please do not see these things as marks of strength or ego building exercises to be performed to prove one's self. Dark work is a calling which requires extensive mentoring and knowledge to be performed safely. From a practitioner's point of view, you are very lucky to get more than one chance too!
