Exorcism

Mankind alone amongst the beasts demonstrably examines and actively seeks to understand and quantify his existence. Until he examines the physical, spiritual and mental as an integrated whole, the Question will not be answered.  Until viewed wholistically, any answers can make no sense because the Questions themselves are not understood. -- Craig Berry

What is an Exorcism?

Of all the shamanic functions, exorcism is probably the least required and most dangerous to all around.  An exorcism is essentially a dispossession taken to extreme.  Think of a rental tenant being asked to leave for non-payment and going after a few legal letters - this is dispossession.  Now the same scenario requiring the bailiffs and armed police to physically remove the occupant.  This is what an exorcism is.

What is not an exorcism?

An exorcism does not happen to a house (that is clearing).  Neither do exorcisms happen to inanimate objects.  Exorcisms only occur when a hostile spiritual entity is determined to stay within a victim.

Why does an exorcism escalate to an exorcism?

Exorcisms occur when, for whatever reason, the possessing spirit recognises the shaman's efforts to fool it or coax it out of its victim and refuses to leave.

What happens during an exorcism?

The shaman must go through the same processes as a dispossession but failing to transfer the spirit, the shaman must enter into the body of the victim, melding energies and extending themselves into the victim, much as another possessing spirit.  The process is typically contained within a prepared circle and becomes a spiritual wrestling contest with the loser banished.

Providing that all goes well, the shaman must then dispossess the victim whilst maintaining their own defence against what is likely to be quite an angry spirit.

Some variations rely on group ritual or external belief but all true exorcisms are the most dangerous of esoteric practices and should be respected as one for which a practitioner is called.  Ego here will result in injury or worse.  Performing an exorcism at anything less that their most power-full is a recipe for disaster.
